Biotechnology Research
The University of Michigan launched Biointerfaces Institute BI in 2012 to redefine the frontiers of health sciences by fostering cross-disciplinary breakthroughs in bioinnovations in brain cancer, cell and tissue engineering, drug delivery and adaptive materials, nanotechnology, neural engineering, and single-cell technologies. This unconventional research hub is a disruptive force that leads to new and improved healthcare technologies because collaborations between engineers and physicians and life and physical scientists occur daily. Over the last ten years, more than 1200 journal articles, 200 inventions, 120 patents, and 13 startup companies have emerged from BI. Now we are looking toward the future and planning our next ten years.
BI is home to 33 research groups led by our award-winning faculty. Each faculty member leads a team of students, postdocs, and/or researchers to advance scientific research. Our faculty from the School of Dentistry, College of Engineering, School of Medicine, and College of Pharmacy are all located on-site at BI. This proximity allows for the BI shared space model to grow meaningful collaborations as members utilize over 30 shared pieces of equipment across our 56,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility.
