About the Job

Company Description

At Kaizen Academy, we believe education should feel less like a lecture hall and more like a collaborative workshop. Inspired by the Japanese philosophy of "Kaizen" (continuous improvement), we've created a learning environment where middle and high school students actively shape their academic journey through personalized coaching and iterative growth. Our San Diego-based academy blends the best of both worlds including dynamic in-person sessions and flexible virtual learning. We don't just teach to the test; we help students discover their learning style, build momentum through small wins, and develop the confidence to tackle any challenge. Think of us as your academic design studio, where every student's potential gets custom-built.

Role Description

We're seeking a dynamic instructor to lead our youth innovation programs, including competition-level startup incubation and hands-on STEM exploration camps. You'll guide students ages 8-18 through project-based learning, fostering creativity while teaching technical skills in robotics, AI, 3D printing, and entrepreneurship.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead engaging sessions for two flagship programs: Competition Camp (ages 13-18) and Explorer Camp (ages 8-12)
  • Teach technical skills including robotics, 3D printing, laser cutting, and basic AI/programming concepts
  • Guide student teams through product development cycles from ideation to prototype
  • Facilitate project-based learning with appropriate scaffolding for different age groups
  • Mentor students in developing presentation and pitch skills
  • Create a startup incubator environment that balances structure with creative freedom
  • Manage classroom equipment including 3D printers, laser cutters, and robotics kits
  • Communicate student progress to parents and program coordinators

Required Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing or completed Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Education, or related field
  • Hands-on experience with at least 2 of the following: robotics, 3D printing, laser cutting, programming, CAD design, or Arduino/Raspberry Pi
  • Strong ability to explain complex concepts to young learners
  • Excellent classroom management skills
  • Enthusiasm for working with youth and fostering innovation
  • Reliable transportation and ability to commit to consistent schedule.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous teaching or mentoring experience with K-12 students
  • Experience with entrepreneurship, hackathons, or startup environments
  • Familiarity with design thinking and agile methodologies
  • Background in FIRST Robotics, Science Olympiad, or similar competitions
  • Experience with teaching project-based learning approaches

What We Offer

  • Competitive hourly rate based on experience
  • Opportunity to shape innovative STEM curriculum
  • Access to state-of-the-art makerspace equipment
  • Professional development opportunities
  • Flexible to work around class schedules for current students
  • Potential for program expansion and increased hours
